School Nurse (RN) (Healthcare)



CORE COMPETENCIES:
1.    Administer all medications as per physician's orders while on duty:

  • Document all medication administration. 
  • Monitor all medication administration documentation.
  • Monitor and maintain standards of medication storage and administration. 
  • Monitor students for medication side effects. 
  • Maintain ongoing communication with all staff regarding changes in medication orders.
  • Monitor and care for day students.
  • Monitor audio/visual screening for students.

2.    Providing information and services in school health related areas:

  • Promotion of health education and health practices.
  • Assessment of community and school health needs.
  • Physical and mental health assessment of children and youth.
  • Development, management, and evaluation of the school health program.
  • Prevention, identification, and control of communicable diseases.
  • Counseling techniques, referral, and health care management of children and youth.
  • Case management of health needs of children and youth.
  • Competence in dealing with health related issues of diverse populations.    
  • Child and adolescent development.
  • Educational psychology.

3.     Recognizing symptoms and consequences of safety and environmental factors:

  • Child abuse
  • Substance abuse
  • Teenage pregnancy
  • Violence
  • Homelessness and poverty
  • Emergency response and crisis intervention planning
  • Safe and healthy school environment

4.    Assessing, documenting and managing the health care needs of children and youth with disabilities: 

  • Technological care
  • Nutrition
  • Medication
  • Participation in multidisciplinary meetings
  • Development of an individualized plan of health care

5.    Regulatory, ethical and professional issues and responsibilities governing the provision of health care services in the school including: 

  • Federal, state and local laws and regulations which impact children and  youth,
  • Pennsylvania State Professional Nurse Law.
  • Pennsylvania school code and regulations.
  • American Nursing Association/National Association of School Nurses code of ethics.
  • Privacy and confidentiality.
  • Child and parental rights.
  • Be familiar with agency's Policies and Procedures and function within the directives provided.

6.    Professionalism:

  • Knowledge of the Professional Code of Conduct.
  • Compliance with school or Glade Run requirements for maintaining accurate records, communicating with families.
  • Compliance with participating in school and/or Glade Run events and school or state mandated professional growth and development opportunities.
  • Professional journals, organizations and other sources of professional development
REQUIREMENTS:
Academic:    
  1. Must be a Registered Nurse.   One year of psychiatric experience recommended. 
Physical Requirements:
  1. Must have physical dexterity in order to assist in client/student physical interventions when necessary. 
  2. Must complete and pass agency Therapeutic Crisis Intervention training and maintain certification. 
  3. Must be able to lift 30 lbs. 
Emotional Requirements:
  1. Must have emotional stability to perform essential job functions.
Other Requirements:
  1. Must possess verbal and written communication skills.
  2. Valid driver's license and acceptable driving record are required
  3. Must be able to adjust hours to job requirements.
  4. Access to a telephone.
  5. Must have the ability to implement written physician orders.
  6. Must have acceptable PA State Police Clearance, PA Child Abuse History clearance, FBI clearance, Arrest/Conviction Report and Certification Form, and Act 168 Forms.
  7. Must be able to identify with the agency Mission Statement and support the agency's Core Values.
