We are the people behind the products that help keep the world connected at home, school, work, at play, and everywhere in between. VIAVI employees are passionate about supporting customer success and we welcome people who bring their best every day to the company – to question, to collaborate and to push for solutions that will delight our customers.

Duties & Responsibilities:

Position Summary:

We are seeking a skilled and motivated engineer to lead and support the development, integration, and testing of inertial measurement systems based on MEMS gyroscopes and accelerometers. The ideal candidate will have a deep understanding of inertial sensor physics, signal processing, and sensor fusion, with hands-on experience in both hardware and software aspects of IMU design.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Evaluate and select commercial MEMS gyroscopes and accelerometers for new and existing products.
  • Develop algorithms for bias compensation, temperature calibration, and signal conditioning.
  • Perform in-depth analysis of inertial sensor performance, including noise, stability, and dynamic behavior.
  • Contribute to the mechanical and electrical integration of IMUs into navigation systems.
  • Design, simulate, and support test plans to characterize IMU performance under various environmental conditions (vibration, shock, temperature).
  • Collaborate with PCB and mechanical designers to optimize layout, packaging, and signal integrity.
  • Cooperate with manufacturing to transition prototypes into production.
  • · Support failure analysis and root cause investigations in both lab and field test conditions.
  • Stay current with new MEMS technologies and trends; maintain active communication with sensor vendors and research institutions.

Pre-Requisites / Skills / Experience Requirements:

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Applied Physics, or related field.
  • 3+ years of experience in inertial sensors, MEMS devices, or related systems.
  • Strong theoretical background in sensor physics, signal processing, and control systems.
  • Experience working with IMU testing equipment, data logging, and analysis tools (e.g., MATLAB, Python, LabVIEW).
  • Familiarity with inertial navigation systems (INS), GNSS/INS integration, and motion modeling.
  • Understanding of mechanical design constraints for inertial sensors (vibration, damping, resonance).
  • Knowledge of PCB design principles and electrical signal conditioning is a plus.
  • Hands-on experience in lab testing, debugging, and prototype development.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with high-precision navigation systems (aerospace, defense, robotics, etc.)
  • Knowledge of embedded systems, C/C++ firmware development.
  • Familiarity with environmental and MIL-STD testing protocols.
