Job Description
Primary Function of Position

As a member of the Human Factors Team, the Sr. Human Performance Engineer (HPE) leads the development of behavioral research on surgeons and care teams with Intuitive products to inform product strategy for future development, establish evidence for product development and product claims.

As an HPE you will work closely with engineers (mechanical engineers, computer scientists, clinical engineers), product designers (industrial designers, interaction designers), product managers, as well as clinical scientists (health economists, clinical affairs, medical officers).

HPE conducts research to gain a deep understanding of human performance capabilities with respect to the usability of Intuitive products. This function conducts human subjects research that is focused on surgeon and care team cognition, perception, biomechanics, and neuronal functions underlying performance associated with robotic surgery. Evidence generated from these studies provide strategic insight into "what", "why", and "how much" surgeons and care teams differ in performance across a range of products. This evidence informs design strategies, defines requirements, and substantiates claims.

This role functions in ambiguous and strategic stages of product development that involve the ability to position and conduct experimental research within a business. This research demands extensive follow-through to translate, communicate, ideate, prototype, and build novel evidence-based strategies, tools, and concepts that operationalize and inform the intuitiveness of existing and new products. This role demands quick changes in direction with capacity to think strategically while maintaining focus on the details. This role is an engaging opportunity that is highly technical with the expectation that you can integrate knowledge and skills related to scientific behavioral research that actionably supports the product design strategies, product requirements, and product claims associated with state-of-the-art human-robot interfaces.

Essential Job Duties

  • Collect, synthesize and present detailed human performance data regarding how users interact with Intuitive products through various research techniques including controlled experimentation, simulations, direct observations, workflow analyses, profiling, metric development.
  • Drafting usability requirements, including physical, cognitive, social and organizational aspects of human factors that influence performance with Intuitive products.
  • Leading tasks analyses, usability risk analyses, and workflow assessments.
  • Literature review/ systematic analyses.
  • Designing studies, authoring protocols, training junior staff on products and protocols.
  • Developing experimental conditions in domains associated with neuromotor/ sensorimotor control and learning, biomechanics, cognition and perception.
  • Analyzing data, including processing, inspecting, transforming, modeling, as well as basic descriptive and inferential analysis.
  • Conducting human subjects research.
  • Authoring technical reports, white papers, abstracts, manuscripts at all organizational levels.
  • Authoring and managing IRB submissions.
  • Developing, integrating, and applying novel instrumentation and applications for human subjects research.
