Position Classification and Description
POSITION TITLE: Staff Accountant
CLASSIFICATION: Exempt
DEPARTMENT: Finance
SUPERVISOR: Controller
GRADE: E4
Position Summary:
Under the direction of the Finance Director and Assistant Finance Director, accomplishes the objectives of the Finance department. Ensures all accounting functions and programs are maintained in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles and Governmental Accounting Standards. Maintain confidentiality of all privileged information.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
• Assists other departments by responding to questions and researching information regarding their account transactions and balances.
• Maintains accounting records and systems by preparing journal entries, preparing balances, adjusting budgets, analyzing discrepancies, and initiating corrective action.
• Balances and records journal entries to close accounting records at the end of the month and the end of the period.
• Maintain Fixed Assets and calculate the deprecation at the end of year.
• Prepares payroll journal entries for each pay period and payroll accruals.
• Prepares bank reconciliations and records journal entries for multiple accounts.
• Performs accounts receivable invoicing.
• Maintains a variety of electronic and hard copy files and documents.
• Maintains vendor master files; enters new vendors or existing vendor changes into database.
• Compiles data and prepares presentation of information for audits.
• Assist in the preparation of year-end schedules for auditors and perform special account analysis for the audit.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with a major in accounting, finance, business administration, or a closely related field. Must have three or more years accounting experience with Tribal/Government. Must be able to successfully pass a pre-employment drug/alcohol screen and background investigation including a motor vehicle check. Must possess and maintain a valid New Mexico driver's license and be insurable under the Pueblo's insurance.
Knowledge, Abilities, Skills, and Certifications:
• Knowledge of the standards, policies, practices, and procedures of Generally Accepted
Accounting Principles and Governmental Accounting Standards.
• Skill in operating various word-processing, spreadsheets, and database software
programs in a Windows environment.
• Skill in preparing, reviewing, and analyzing operational and financial reports.
• Ability to exercise independent judgment.
• Ability to interact and maintain good working relationships with individuals of varying social and cultural backgrounds.
• Ability to interpret applicable federal, state, county and local laws, regulations, and requirements.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality.
• Ability to learn and have a positive attitude.
• Ability to work independently and meet strict timelines.
• Ability to communicate efficiently and effectively both verbally and in writing.
Physical Demands:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly is required to sit; use hands
to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to walk. The employee occasionally is required to stand; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
Work Environment:
Work is generally performed in an office setting with a moderate noise level.
