Senior Research Scientist (Finance)



The successful applicant for this full-time position will be responsible for independently conducting laboratory and field research in marine microbiology and genomics, computational research including bioinformatic sequence analyses and statistics, writing manuscripts and grant proposals, and training graduate and undergraduate students. Specific research projects can vary within the lab's research domain ( www.marine.usf.edu/genomics/ ).

This position is available immediately but there is flexibility in start date. Applications will be reviewed until the position is filled. The initial appointment will be for one year, with long-term renewal given satisfactory performance. Annual salary range of $65k-$70k plus benefits.   • This position requires a Bachelor's degree in a natural, physical or medical science with 5 years of experience.
  • Demonstrated research skills in molecular laboratory methods and bioinformatics/biostatistics for microbial and viral community analysis
  • Proficiency with R-based workflows for ecological and statistical analysis
  • Familiarity with high-performance computing (HPC) environments, Linux/Unix scripting, and GitHub for version control
  • Demonstrated ability to write and publish peer-reviewed papers

Preferred Qualifications:
  • PhD in biology, microbiology, bioinformatics, genetics, molecular biology, oceanography, marine sciences or related field at the time of appointment
  • Research background in marine virology or microbiology
  • Experience with metabarcoding, metagenomics and analysis of aquatic microbial or viral communities
  • Expertise in method development, optimization, and troubleshooting of molecular and computational workflows
  • Experience in mentoring both undergraduate and graduate students
  • Effective science communicator
  • Interest in public outreach and education

Degree Equivalency Clause: Four years of direct experience for a bachelor's degree.
